Virtual Biz Cards: A Must-Have?

I’d like to consider myself one who stays in touch with technology. I try as hard as I can, but I’m always cognizant about the fact that although some cool “new” marketing tools now exist, they may only be trends opposed to replacements. That is, a great idea sitting on the edge of technology does not always equate to a total replacement for something that is already extremely effective.

I had a friend who asked me about these the other day. I think that vCards are a great idea, and they are wonderfully effective marketing tools; HOWEVER, I do not think they completely replace old-fashioned business cards. As a matter of fact, I think it’s impossible for them to do so in the near future. Don’t rely on other websites to tell you that business cards are becoming obsolete based on some crystal ball assumption disquised as a fact. Use the facts that you have at your fingertips today…literally. Think about it, when you get a business card in your hand, you are forced to connect with someone. The mere action involving the extension of your hand to meet another simply to get the business card is a personal interaction. It is an experience that cannot be replaced by a snazzy vCard. If you are really conscientious about your brand, then you are also meticulous about details like paper weight, gloss finish versus matte finish, angular edges versus rounded edges, etc. All of these characteristics appeal to your sense of touch in combination with your sense of sight. vCards only appeal to your sight…online that is. And can I get an amen for the amount of times you may have been fooled by something you saw online, only to be bamboozled by seeing it in the flesh?! I digress.

I’m not saying that you should not use vCards at all. But what I am saying is that you should consider vCards as supplemental items, perhaps to appeal to a segment of your target audience that primarily relies on virtual greetings and interactions throughout most, if not all, of their business dealings. But I can assure you that this segment of society does not constitute the vast majority of us. Be smart about your marketing plan, and try to strategically position tools like physical business cards and vCards in your everyday marketing efforts.

Anyway, after my discussion with my friend, I went off and found an interesting article on It further details my claim that there is nothing like a good old-fashioned biz card! Take a look:
